What is an Adjustment Disorder?


Adjustment disorder, which is a psychological disorder caused by stress, is described as emotional and behavioral reactions that develop within 3 months as a reaction to any stress factor.

How Does Compliance Disorder Arise?

Different situations such as the end of an emotional relationship, moving, changing work and school, changing the city, military service, marriage, divorce, a serious illness, having an accident, having an operation, experiencing a natural disaster such as an earthquake or flood are the stress factors that will lead to maladjustment.

How is a maladaptive disorder diagnosed?

In order to diagnose psychological adjustment disorder, the symptoms should not be related to the grief process. The disease often ends within 6 months after the stress factors or stress-related results disappear. In cases exceeding 6 months, there is a chronic adjustment disorder. Emotional and behavioral reactions that emerge in order to be called psychological adjustment disorder should cause impairment in professional, familial, social and academic functionality.

Individuals who develop adjustment disorders are often depressed and have low self-esteem. Suicidality and alcohol use problems are also common in these people. Cultural structure is also important in adjustment disorder. The meaning attributed to the source of stress and the pressure applied in that society are serious reasons that undermine the process.

Maladaptive Disorder Treatment

Medication and psychotherapy are used in the treatment of adjustment disorder. The main factor in the treatment of adjustment disorder is the psychotherapies to reduce and eliminate the stress factor, and if this is not possible, to increase adaptation. Mental health professionals must reveal the meaning of the Stressor to the client.
